Medial branch blocks are formulated to interrupt the ability of the nerves to transmit any pain signals to the brain. This also helps determine, evaluate or diagnose the origin of the pain.
A medial branch block is in the form of an injection of a strong anesthetic directed onto the medial branch nerves that supply signals in the facet joints which are the bony part of the spine. Pain varies differently and the degree of pain may range from acute to chronic.
When a medial branch nerve block is performed, the anesthetic is injected near the small medial nerves that are connected to a specific facet joint. When an outright relief from pain is felt after the injection, then the source of pain is the facet joint where the injection was administered.
